Food Anthropology- a short paper for Anthro 10 with Felipe Pablo IV

We are what we eat”
Food is any substance that can be ingested or drunk for sustenance or even for pleasure in a hedonistic point of view. There are many sources of food which includes plants, animals or other categories such as fungus or fermented and processed products.
Authors have recognized the importance of food in everyday life. For without it, society cannot function. The importance of food in the society is very evident, that it is often discussed in the different fields of social science.
We have been raised with food as an important aspect of life. Especially in Filipino communities, social gatherings have always been related with food. Without food, social gatherings will never be the same.
Food has, indeed, become a part of our self identity. Different cultures are often associated with food, thus food defines what a certain culture is – in the point of view of the natives and of outsiders. Different societies often dictate what is considered food and what is not. Identifying even a single universal food taboo may even be impossible.
Some foods are also identified and associated with a certain religion, gender, age, and even social economic groups. In Philippine setting, dinuguan will never be eaten by Iglesia ni Cristo member, pork will likewise be averted by Muslims. Eating lollipops will defy masculinity. Candies and sweets are for kids. Tuyo and galunggong is not expected in the table of rich families.
Does the way how we choose our food define what we are? Does self identity also depend on the senses that we use in selecting foods to eat? Is there a dominating sense utilized in food selection process? What are the other factors that affect these choices?
